New students sign up for MJDF

11th June 2009

The latest intake of MJDF students were inducted on to FGDP(UK) Scotland’s postgraduate training programme on 5 June. FGDP(UK) Scotland’s nine-month MJDF course prepares young dentists, in particular, for a structured career pathway in general practice. This is based on a mixture of portfolio-based evidence, practical and theoretical work.

FGDP(UK) Scotland’s successful MJDF model has been praised for providing relevant, quality postgraduate programmes for dentists. The course builds on the UK’s vocational training programme which is often regarded as superior to those on offer in other countries. Dentists from across Europe are increasingly keen to take up training opportunities.

Career pathway training opportunities

Claragh Drake studied in Cork but has been working in Kirkcaldy for the past year. Although there are opportunities for young dentists in Ireland, the Scottish model is better funded and offers a clearly defined career pathway. Claragh’s vocational trainer recommended taking the MJDF and she was impressed by the courses offered by FGDP(UK). She has signed up for a place on the east of Scotland study group as a result.

“The FGDP(UK) offer postgraduate courses which are highly relevant to general practice and are very well organised. I found out a lot of information from the website which helped me decide that this was a good course to follow. I would also recommend talking to someone who has taken the MJDF to get as much information as possible. But the tutors are very friendly and they will give you a good idea of what they offer.”

FGDP(UK) operate a 5:1 student to tutor ratio which has greatly improved the success rate of students taking the course. This year’s west of Scotland FGDP(UK) study group achieved a 100 per cent success rate in Part 1 of the MJDF. They are currently working towards their exam in June 2010.

Tutor opportunities

FGDP(UK) Scotland offers flexible opportunities for established practitioners to help train the next generation of dentists. There are many ways in which dentists can work to improve education across Scotland and benefit their own career pathways. FGDP(UK)’s successful MJDF study groups continue to thrive with the support of experienced tutors. This year, Shelley Percival and Jamie Arnot have agreed to shadow Kenneth McDonald and his team of tutors. The committee also greatly appreciates the support of Bruce Hogan who is exploring improved links with alumni from Glasgow University.
